Temporary hotel on Maasvlakte to open in January In January 2010, Hotel At Work will open its doors on the Maasvlakte. The temporary hotel is intended for the builders and technicians who have to work in the westernmost part of the port for extended periods of time. The first 200 beds will be ready in January and by May there will be room for at least 400 labourers. Depending on demand, the hotel will then be expanded to a maximum of 2,500 beds.

Major construction is set to take place in the western port area over the coming years. For example, alongside a number of smaller projects, E.ON and Enecogen will be building power stations, and GATE and Liongas will be constructing LNG terminals. This means thousands of labourers will travel to this part of the port every day. President and Chief Executive Officer of the Havenbedrijf Hans Smits: “The advent of Hotel At Work means that a large proportion of the construction personnel will not have to commute up and down the A15 every day which will reduce traffic jams.” Many of the people working on these construction projects are from abroad and were set to be housed at various locations including holiday parks far from the site.

The hotel's construction started in October. The main buildings which house the kitchen, dining hall and recreation areas, and the first buildings for accommodation were finished in January. There will be various types of rooms from single rooms with their own sanitary facilities to four-bed rooms. The rooms will only be rented to companies working on construction in the port area.

Hotel At Work is located between the Distripark Maasvlakte and the Slufter. It will remain there until 2015 when it will make way for a railway siding. Hotel At Work is an Weststellingwerf BV initiative. This company from Rotterdam operates in the travel, container logistics and real estate industries. In order to enable the building of the Hotel At Work facility, the Havenbedrijf made the land available at a severely reduced rate and installed utility connections at its own expense.
